Τι σήμερα, τι αύριο, τι τώρα (What today, What tomorrow. What Now) -- 1952

Probably the most famous version of this song was recorded by Μαρίκα Νίνου (Marika Ninou), with her characteristic piercing plaintive style, along with Τσιτσάνης Βασίλης. But, this is an especially compelling contemporary rendition performed by η ρεμπέτισσα της Θεσσαλονίκης, the Rembetissa of Thessaloniki, as Μαριώ (Mario) [Μαρία Κωνσταντινίδου (Maria Konstadinidou)] is sometimes known.

The song's rhetorical refrain, what today, what tomorrow, what now? Engages one side a debate about a separation and whether it could have been avoided and perhaps can be undone. This provides a rich scope for interpretation. Marika's version being one of rumination and ambivalence while Mario's being one of passion and bitterness.

What today, what tomorrow, what now?
If we could erase the previous hour
The hour that lead to our separation
Perhaps, for the two of us it would have been better
If we could erase the previous hour.

What today, what tomorrow, what now?
If we wait, what would be gained?
Since the complaining was like a torrent
On that road we two would have come to misfortune
And if the wait what would be gained?

What today, what tomorrow, what now?
Since living together is not going to happen
And since we've taken the descent again,
it's better that we separate
Since living together is not going to happen

Χωρίσαμε ένα δειλινο, We Parted One Sunset, sung here by Sotiria Bellou was also recorded as a duet with her and Vasilis.

We parted one sunset
With tears in the eyes
It was written that our love
Was to become split into two pieces.

I'm pained when I think
Of the beauty of that night
That we gave sweets
oaths kisses and caresses

With yearning I've waited
With pain in my heart
Perhaps you'll return quickly
Again into my arms?

Φίλησέ με (Kiss Me) – 1948

A light piece by Σουγιούλ Μιχάλης Originally performed in the in 40s and 50 by Jenni Chartou (Χαριτου, Τζένη), Sofia Vembo (Βέμπο , Σοφία) and (in the linked to performance) Kakia Mendri (Μενδρη, Κάκια).

Φίλησέ με (Kiss Me) – 1948

I'm able to hide my former silliness,
And you, don't say anything about it,
And don't let jealousy bite you,
Give me another kiss
Only when I was with you for the first time
Did I feel such bliss
with just too two little kisses I'm
flying turbulently above the ground without wings.

Kiss me, kiss me kiss mouth, neck and hair
Kiss me, kiss me the kisses are beautiful work
Kiss me my love yet with intent, with intent
One mouth speaks to the other mouth I love you.

Far from you time passes slowly,
What are you thinking that torments me
But what success I feel gold
when you're close t me
With just two soft words
That does the trick every time
and with a kiss in the peaceful night
There is paradise on earth

Kiss me, kiss me kiss mouth, neck and hair
Kiss me, kiss me the kisses are beautiful work
Kiss me my love yet with intent, with intent
One mouth speaks to the other mouth I love you.

Κάποια μέρα θα γυρίσει κι ο τροχός (Someday the wheel will turn) -- 1951

The piece, sung by Fotis Polimeris (Φωτης Πολυμέρης), was featured in the movie: Εκείνες Που δεν Πρέπει ν' Αγαπούν (Those Who Don't Need to Love), and is representative of the Archonto Rebetiko, aρχοντορεμπέτικο, style, which fused elements of the Rebetico with other elements of Greek popular music along with popular European and American elements. It was seen as an up market or refined form of the Rebetico, suitable for respectable bars and clubs, and might sound to many now as inauthentic. But it had a major effect on Greek music and in it one can see the virtues and vices of it in much of the Laiki music that would follow, a style for which the Archonto Rebetiko was a direct antecedent.

Χιλιάδες όνειρα (Tousands of Dreams) -- 1950

This is another piece by Tonis Maroudas (Μαρούδας, Τώνης), this time a tango, performed by Maroudas with The Three Guitars (Τρίο Κιτάρα). Like Maroudas' previous work I linked to, this one is sung by Nina Lotsari (Λοτσάρη, Nίνα). The instrumentation, using an orchestra of classical guitars and Greek instruments, such as the bouzouki is an especially successful one for the tango. It would be an interesting experiment to put to use on a full tango program.

Yesterday, I passed by an old, familiar little street.
There, where we used to meet,
But I don't hear the singing of the birds,
Everything was withered, nothing lived

As though they were grieving your beloved smile
The withered leaves fall from the branches
And everything waited for you to return.
When they'll unfurl themselves and become scented

Thousands of dreams because they went awry
And some dreams and such kisses
Thus is life the hardnesses brought
The sworn dreams stay, a thousand kisses

But the trick I pass my age
And because of that brings me suffering
This is how life unfolds,
This is how has always been,
Everything beautiful must die,
….

Thus is life the hardnesses brought
The sworn dreams stay, a thousand kisses

Μ’ έκαψες, μ’ έκαψες (You burn me) -- 1951

Originally sung by Nikos, Goubaris (Γουνάρης, Νίκος) this piece by Michalis Sougioul (Σουγιούλ, Μιχάλης) is not one you'll find in many current repertoires. But the song was quite popular at the time and both the song-smithing and performance are workmanlike. If it fails to appeal to the modern ear, it's on account of changing tastes and fashion rather than a defect in execution.

Whoever catches a glimpse of you, bursts into fire
Flame jump your your eyes
My life is consumed with fire
With the madness of your fibs
And with your flaming lips
Your mouth burns sweetly
Who ever looks upon you even once in their life
Is reduced to ashes

You burn me, You burn me, You burn me
With only one glance

You light me, you light , you light
Within my heart a fire

You burn me, You burn me, You burn me
You light flames of madness

Kiss me, kiss me kiss me
As only you can do so well

The only way to extinguish my flames
Is with your sweet kiss.

Όλα ρημάδια (Everything's wrecked) -- 1951

Sofia Vembo (Βέμπο, Σόφια) employs a sung-spoken style reminiscent of Marlene Dietrich with whom she's roughly contemporary. I've added a performance of Dietrich's from a few years after Vembo's to that demonstrate this affinity. Vombo's vocals together with embryonic laiki arrangement makes the piece striking and powerfully evocative.

I see black black decay around me
In my spidery, barren life
My hot tears have found my cheeks.
From the blows fate has given me
My hands hand exhausted and empty
Everything's wrecked, everything's wrecked

You filled me with black arrows
Which your oaths became
And I ask myself, tearfully, and wonder:
Such poison I've been given to drink
And how I've been wounded by ruin
Everything's wrecked, everything's wrecked

And our child, who filled me with spirit
And that whose joy bitter weights I bore mildly
Without the rolling laughter and and heartbeats
Life is ruined and empty
Everything's wrecked, everything's wrecked

Only near you is the pregnant moment
Only near you blooms all the earth

Να με παίρνανε τα σύννεφα (Take me clouds!) - 1951

Sofia Vembo (Βέμπο, Σοφία ), again paired with music and lyrics from Leo Rapitis (Ραπίτης, Λεό) and Mimis Traiforos (Τραϊφόρος, Μίμης ) respectively, sings about needing a vacation. Though, her proposed escape to a desert island, especially after her song about the urban delights of Athens, makes me think that perhaps I'm missing something in my translation.

Άστα τα μαλλάκια σου (Pull Back Your Hair) - 1951

Fotos Polymeris (Φώτος Πολυμέρης) sing a of the whipping winds of the south, whether the craggy beaches of Southern Peloponnese or one of the arid island we can't be sure.

Pull back your tangled hair
Pull it back so it may flutter in the crazy South
Now that your youth's in full bloom
Pull back your tangled hair

Look at the wide blue sea
And pull back your tangled hair.
Pull back your tangled hair
Pull back which is blown in the crazy South

Woeful weather will come, listen to me,
When you won't have lips red as a flame
You'll have well styled hair
And woes will come, listen to me

That the light in your eyes will be extinguished
And your lips won't be like a flame.
Pull back your tangled hair
Pull back which is blown in the crazy South

Now the Spring has come, Summer will come
And then Fall, and then come hardships
On your crazy shoulder I stretch my hand
Now Spring has come, Summer will come

Let me say one thousand times I love you
And then Fall, hardships will come
Pull back your tangled hair
Pull back which is blown in the crazy South

Χαράμι (Ruin) - 1951

There is nothing that can rival a Greek lament and this one sung by Sofia Vembo (Σοφία Βέμπο) is nearly prototypical. So, many great turns of phase and such striking imagery: στη καρδιά τη σιδερένια (in your heart of iron), αγάπη δράμι (a dram of love), and of course the work χαράμι (waste) from the Turkish word of nearly the same pronunciation, haram. And, of course, there is Sofia Vembo's voice which carries that husky Dietrich-esque, cosmopolitan world weariness that one poster on the YouTube link refers to as a flame in her voice (μια φλόγα στη φωνή), which is apt, as both the song, and the Vembo's are similar to the that of the American Blues torch song singer.

My night vigils to you have become a waste
And all my tears have become a river
And all my suffering for your joy brought to wast
Everything I've done for you has become a ruin.

I know that in your heart of iron
that there isn't even a dram of love
And all my treasures transformed to ruin
Everything's been ruined

You unjust deals have wounded me
and made my heart black as sin
and for the love and faith I gave to you,
turned to ruin, ruin.

Όνειρα που για μία νύχτα μόνο (Dream for just one night) -- 1951

Composed by Tonis Maroudas (Μαρούδας, Τώνης), this song was originally popularized by him and The Three Guitars (Τρίο Κιτάρα) in the early 50s. To the modern ear the crooning of Tonis and the somewhat conventional, even schmaltzy orchestration and performances, obscures what is a delicate, yet elegant recollection of that type of dream that one awakes from regretting that it wasn't real. The contemporary performance I've linked to, sung by Nina Lotsari (Λοτσάρη, Nίνα ), provides an excellent interpretation of this piece.

Όνειρα που για μία νύχτα μόνο (Dream for just one night)

Yesterday it appeared to me again
And you came again in love
And like the old time
We were so blissful

But it was a mad dream

A dream, for one night only
A dream, that they hold for one night
Extinguished always by daybreak
And dies away like the flower
That I hold in my heart.

Sofia Vembo (Σοφία Βέμπο) sings a light composition by Rapitis Leo (Ραπίτης Λεό). Listening to it one can imagine the Athens of 1951, just two years after a the destructive civil war that followed the devastation of World War II, as a sophisticated cosmopolitan city -- by the people that invented the word cosmopolitan and sophistication -- on par with the other European cities of romance, perhaps Venice or Paris. And maybe, with the Greek sun in front of you and after a couple of glasses of blond retsina, it was.

The world has a heap of beauty
but as for Athens, who doesn't know
that it has a charm not found in other places
Yes, because there of the sky and the ground
if I'm taken there by lofty chance
I don't forget for a moment
even one of the Athenian streets.

Rendezvous in Athens, the hearts whisper deeply
Rendezvous in Athens to drink our light retsina
Athens, we're enthralled by you
Even if we leave for a little while
Rendezvous in Athens, the hearts whisper deeply.

You're magic to me, Athens
The sun shining down in front of you
And when you drink two glasses of wine
You'll be in an oblivion of flirtatiousness
And thus you have the sun beams that
unwaveringly dress you in gold
And thousands of kisses
It playfully gives ones hair

Ο Τραμπαρίφας (Taxi driver) - 1951

A light piece about escaping the oppressive Athenian heat to a sea side bar. In what was to become characteristic of Greek laïko (Λαϊκό) music, in contrast to Rebetico, slang words are derived from other European sources, rather than just Turkish: τάλιρα (Italian: lira), ρέμπελη (Italian: rebelo), φουλαριστός (Engish: full!), etc.

Dear Manoli the taxi driver

Tonight the girl want the sea
and I never deny her what she wants.

All the day I work
hard as usual,
and to get away from the heat, dear rascal,
go to you willingly
Tonight I escaped the heat
to hang out in the night coolness

In the seaside bar,
beers and shrimp,
guitars, tambourines and violins
stretch out on the beach
Tonight I have money,
dear mangas, to tear up Phalerum

Αντιλαλούνε τα βουνά (The mountains echo) - 1951

Stelios Kazantidis (Στέλιος Καζαντζίδης) sings this Rebetiko song of Vasilis Tzitzanis' (Βασίλης Τσιτσάνης) written the plaintive style.

Worry beads, κομπολόι, play a conspicuous roll in Rebetiko songs, in fact there is even a song about loosing them. Indeed, if you listen to many Rebetiko songs, this won't be the last time you hear them rhymed with ρολόι, clock. Something that's surprising to those not native to Greek culture is that despite a similarity to rosaries, worry beads don't have a religious significance.

Αντιλαλούνε τα βουνά (The mountains echo)

The mountains echo
as I cry in the evenings
The hours pass pathetically
with an old clock
And I sigh and
handle my worry beads.

The mountains echo
as I cry in the evenings

I'm overwhelmed by my woe
and by my great burdens
I once had courage for life
but since I lost you
my only wish is death

The mountains echo
as I cry in the evenings

I moan from my wounds
and from your own blades
You've filled me with wounds
and pain gnaws me
and in the flames that you've thrown me in
nothing can save me.

Κάθε Βράδυ Λυπημένη (Every Night I'm Sad) - 1951

Here Marika Ninou (Μαρίκα Νινου) sings in the Piraian style, a song of remonstration against false accusations. Up until the mid 40s vocals in the Piraian style had been the domain of horse voiced men. Under influence of Tsitsanis, Soteria Bella and Marika Ninou introduced women's voices to this style and added to it's artistic range. The famous film Rebetika is in part patterned after her life. Ninou was actually from an ethnically Armenian family, studying in Armenian schools in Greece; her first musical experience were singing in the Armenian church. In fact, one can't help but be struck by the similarities of the female Rebetika vocal style and the plain chant female choirs of the of the Armenian church.

As with many Rebetico lyrics, the meaning of these are somewhat ambiguous. While a straight forward interpretation of the lyrics would be that sung by a woman falsely accused. It's equally possible to interpret them as a rhetorical exercise: that in fact she is not falsely accused: the singer's agenda being to find out what it is that her lover knows and make an emotional appeal, however authentically felt, to persuade him that what he's heard is false. That be the case too, but we the listener can't know the real truth, nor can we however, fail to be persuaded by her appeal.

rival

------ Μετάφρασης (translation)------

Every evening I'm sad
every evening I'm deep in thought
tell me what they say to you about me
and why your eyes are always filled with tears

You're hiding something in your heart
I can read it in eyes
maybe you're sick of me? I should leave?
don't do this to me, to kill me little by little

Stop crying, enough!
you how much I've done for you
you know how there are always rivalries
don't listen to the lies on the street.

Γιατί Με Ξύπνησες Πρωί (Why do you wake me so early) -- 1951

In this song, Soteria Bellas (Σωτηρία Μπέλλου) sings background to Vassilis Tsitsanis.

ωωω!

Why do you wake me so early
Out of my deep sleep?

Why do you know at the door?
What do you want now?
Oooo I don't want you love any more

You jeer at me
How I'm so accursed with you

You've passed through my life
Throwing tantrums and aging me

At least in sleep
I can forget about it all

Why do you wake me so early
Out of my deep sleep?

Γκιουλμπαχάρ (Gioulbahar) - 1951

Rena Dalia (Ρένα Ντάλια) sings this song by Vasilis Tsitsanis (Βασίλης Τσιτσάνης) about Gioul Bahar, a historical figure – the Greek daughter of priest who married the sultan some time in the late 15th century, a short time after the fall of Constantinople. The song has numerous Turkish words, and employs Asia Minor rhythms and vocal style.

Some night in the Miseri I see her
bewitching beauty, sweet Gioulbahar

You wound me, you wound me
Oh flower, Gioulbahar
The Arab melody: slowly slowly
Gives me kisses
When she holds me in her arms

Slave to her sweet kiss
I am bound with passion for her
I cry, pained by regret
I'll never forget Gioulbahar

You wound me, you wound me
Oh flower, Gioulbahar
The Arab melody: slowly slowly
Gives me kisses
When she holds me in her arms

Θέλω να χορεύω σάμπα (I Want to Dance the Samba) -- 1950

Σμαρούλα Γιουλή sings here to the “new dance” the samba rather then to a swing beat. Of course, the samba wasn't new at the time, having its origins in Brazilian dance music of the late 19th century. However during World War II the US government initiated a good neighbor program in Latin America to promote cooperation and to shore up the region's support. The result of this was a sort of Latin American chic that lasted past the end of the war and was world wide. Greek music in particular was highly influenced by Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American music, a trend that preceded the war and continues to this day.

With this new dance
I want to dance without stopping even a moment
I want to dance the dance
To the mad rhythm of the samba

I've caught the madness, Ela! Ela!
The sweet plan of the samba
To dance samba with Karamba!
All samba without stopping
That's what I like, That's what I like

Ράσπα απ' το Μεξικό (The Raspa of Mexico) -- 1950

The Raspa is a tune and dance from the Mexican state Veracruz. The Mexican hat dance is a combination of Jarabe Tapatío and La Raspa and it is to that tune that Πωλ Μενεστρέλ (Paul Menestrel) has added is inventive lyrics in The Raspa.

Couplets, refain,
kisses, alcoholic cocktail,
and the good works,
the raspa from Mexico
A dance and three turns
A little sweet kiss
And hidden joys
The Raspa of Mexico

Like the top spins,
Like the deer runs fleetly,
The lady you terrorize the lady,
Then the you're doing the dance.

What mad dance is this they say?
Which looks like removing a screw
Where the crowd is in good fortune
in our age to find.

For every beautiful girl
What she loves is to line up and go
and if the say a word and goes crazy
The old women gossip
and as the cavalier holds her
Like he want to haul her around
Things heat up when he holds her
Because she'll give him a little kiss
