Θέλω να χορεύω σάμπα (I Want to Dance the Samba) -- 1950

Σμαρούλα Γιουλή sings here to the “new dance” the samba rather then to a swing beat. Of course, the samba wasn't new at the time, having its origins in Brazilian dance music of the late 19th century. However during World War II the US government initiated a good neighbor program in Latin America to promote cooperation and to shore up the region's support. The result of this was a sort of Latin American chic that lasted past the end of the war and was world wide. Greek music in particular was highly influenced by Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American music, a trend that preceded the war and continues to this day.

With this new dance
I want to dance without stopping even a moment
I want to dance the dance
To the mad rhythm of the samba

I've caught the madness, Ela! Ela!
The sweet plan of the samba
To dance samba with Karamba!
All samba without stopping
That's what I like, That's what I like
